Stylish Favor Packaging & More: An Interview with Little Birdie Boutique

This week's interview features Ashley Dernick and Patty DePierri of Little Birdie Boutique located in Houston, Texas.

Tell us a little about yourself:
We are a mother-daughter creative team with a main focus of providing unique event favors and gifts. We truly believe that thoughtful details can make a wedding a memorable event for all!

What special things do you create for weddings?
We try to create shop items that will appeal to brides with a variety of styles as well as fit into today's trends. This includes favor boxes, eco friendly favors, modern favors and favors with a vintage flair.

Who or what sparked your interest in making wedding-related items?
We realized our love for favors when we were planning my older sister's wedding a few years ago. We had so much fun coming up with a favor for her wedding that we started offering to make favors for all the weddings and showers of our family and friends!

What is a little known fact, or something unique about your work that is interesting?
Something fun about our designs is that when we are working on a new item we have to run it by my other sister to make sure we get another opinion! She has the final say so! It is her way of being involved with the shop :-)

If you are married, what’s the one thing you wish you had for your wedding that you didn’t?
The on thing I wish I had for my wedding was a professional photographer! I had a college friend take the pictures and she did a nice job but nothing beats an experienced professional.

What is your favorite wedding song?
My favorite wedding song is Keith Urban "Memories of Us"

What is your favorite part of the wedding journey?
My favorite part of the wedding journey is the look on the groom's face when he sees his beautiful Bride walking down the aisle!

What advice can you share for all the brides getting married this year?
My advice for brides is to have a wedding coordinator!

What is your perfect honeymoon spot?
We went to London on our honeymoon and it was fantastic! It was my first time out the states and so it was extra special!

If you could pick anyone famous that would purchase your items for their wedding, who would they be?
Martha Stewart :-)

If you could choose 1 item from your shop that you wish every bride could have, what would it be?
Probably the vintage-inspired swizzle stick favor. It is so pretty!

Our Very Own Metalsmith: An interview with bmjnyc

This week's interview features Barbara Polinsky - Owner, Designer, Metalsmith of Barbara Michelle Jacobs Jewelry (BMJNYC.)

Tell us a little about yourself:
My name is Barbara Polinsky and I started selling on Etsy less than 2 years ago. I feel fortunate to have experienced a few different careers before starting my own business as a metalsmith and jewelry designer. My journey has been interesting, to say the least. I never formally studied design (I studied marketing and more recently metalsmithing techniques) and didn’t learn “the rules” of aesthetics and styling. My process originates from within, allowing me to incorporate lessons learned from life and experiences gained by working in different fields.

I try to make jewelry that is beautiful but more importantly, jewelry that has emotional significance as well. I have 2 groupings. The first is called Beauty in Imperfection™, which carries a message of acceptance of others and of our selves. The second is an organic collection I refer to as Twigs. Twigs are made from reclaimed gold and silver, often incorporating repurposed gemstones. It is a tribute to Mother Nature and organic magnificence.

What special things do you create for weddings?
Most often Engagement Rings and Wedding Bands. I have also made custom gifts for the wedding party and Jewelry for the Bride.

Who or what sparked your interest in making wedding-related items?
I started by making new wedding bands and stacking rings for myself– I’m embarrassed to say how many I have. Friends and friends of friends began commissioning me to make rings for them and encouraged me to post a few styles on Etsy. The response has been incredible.

What is a little known fact, or something unique about your work that is interesting? Most of my work comes about by mistake or by accident. Beauty in Imperfection was born when I was trying to make a “perfect” bangle. That day, I kept making careless mistakes and I got so frustrated that I squished the entire piece in a rolling mill! When it emerged from the other end of the mill, I was astonished at the graceful irregular form. It got me thinking about how much time and energy we spend in pursuit of perfection.

If you are married, what’s the one thing you wish you had for your wedding that you didn’t?
Alan and I just celebrated our 20th wedding anniversary. Back then we considered having a video made but never did. I regret not having captured the moment live. Some family members are no longer with us and our children would love to have gotten a glimpse of our life before they were born.

What is your favorite wedding song?
Tonight I Celebrate My Love by Roberta Flack & Peabo Bryson

What is your favorite part of the wedding journey?
I really enjoy collaborating with young men – guiding them in designing the perfect engagement ring for their Brides to be. They are so sincere and genuine in their wish to please their fiance and their promise of building a wonderful life together. I’m honored to help them fulfill this wish and it’s so rewarding to be a part of it.

What advice can you share for all the brides getting married this year?
Keep in mind what is really important and don’t get bent out of shape about supporting details.

What is your perfect honeymoon spot?
A quiet beach.

If you could pick anyone famous that would purchase your items for their wedding, who would they be?
My customer is thoughtful and compassionate. She (and he) has a strong sense of self and how they fit into the world around them. If she is famous on the red carpet or only in her own family, it doesn’t matter to me. I try to treat everyone with consideration and sensitivity.

If you could choose 1 item from your shop that you wish every bride could have, what would it be?
A pair of small Twig Hoop Earrings – they go with everything and also make a nice gift for Bridesmaids.

Thank you so much for your interest in my work. To find out more please check my website , http://bmjnyc.com my Etsy store http://bmjnyc.etsy.com or contact me directly at Barbara@bmjnyc.com

Beautiful Handmade Jewelry: An Interview with Handmade by Diana

This week's interview features Diana Rauckman of Handmade by Diana. Diana is located in Tucson, AZ.

Tell us a little about yourself.
I am a Family Nurse Practitioner by day and a jewelry designer by night and weekends. I was born in North Carolina, grew up most of my life in New Jersey. I met my husband while working in the hospital in New Jersey. We got married in St. Lucia. We had a small wedding with 13 close friends and family members. We decided to travel for the first couple years of our marriage in a RV traveling from New Hampshire to Tennessee and finally settling down in Tucson, AZ. We have 2 cats but no kids yet. I love designing and making jewelry, ever since I learned how I can’t wait to get home from my job to create more.

What special things do you create for weddings?
I make wedding jewelry. I do a lot of custom designs for my customers and try to make the process of finding that perfect set for the bride and her party as easy as possible.

Who or what sparked your interest in making wedding-related items?
In 2005 my sister asked me to be a bridesmaid for her wedding. I was trying my best to find the perfect necklace to match the cobalt blue dress. I met the owner of a bead shop at a craft fair and she let me pick out the beads and the supplies and design and make my own necklace. I then made a set for my cousin, the other bridesmaid, my sister, the bride and many more brides and bridesmaids since then.

What is a little known fact, or something unique about your work that is interesting?
I am extremely particular when it comes to making my wire wrapped jewelry. I use my thumb and index finger to finish off the wire wrapping to make it perfect where a lot of people use pliers. I feel I can get a tighter and more even wrap using my fingers. It has put some wear and tear to my fingers but I feel it is worth it.

If you are married, what’s the one thing you wish you had for your wedding that you didn’t?
My jewelry, I didn’t learn how to make jewelry until the year after I got married. I did make my own tiara and veil though.

What is your favorite wedding song?
I Need You by Marc Anthony, this is mostly because my husband learned this song and sang it to me on the day he proposed to me. My other favorite is “Going to the Chapel of Love” this is just a fun upbeat song that I have loved ever since I was little.

What is your favorite part of the wedding journey?
I really enjoyed getting together all the pieces of my wedding attire, shopping with my friends for the perfect dress and then picking out all the necessary accessories.

What advice can you share for all the brides getting married this year?
Don’t stress too much, it is just not worth it. Have fun and enjoy the day of the wedding. Make sure to allow yourself plenty of time to get everything prepared.

What is your perfect honeymoon spot?
We really enjoyed St. Lucia, we stayed in a beautiful resort called Ladera. Each of the rooms had its own unique decorations. The best part was the one side of the building didn’t have any walls, windows or screens, it was just open to the fresh air and the view of the valley below. We are planning to go back there sometime for a special anniversary.

If you could pick anyone famous that would purchase your items for their wedding, who would they be?
Oprah, because she will most likely promote it and this would help other brides to learn about handmade products and jewelry like mine.

If you could choose 1 item from your shop that you wish every bride could have, what would it be?
Well one of my favorite sets right now is very basic but beautiful, it is great for bridesmaids or even the bride and it is affordable: It is the Swarovski Single Pearl with Swarovski Crystals on a Sterling Silver Chain with Matching Earrings.

Personalize Your Bridal Accessories: An Interview with Monde Design

This week's interview features Shelli Moon of MondeDesign. Shelli is located in the Kansas City, MO area.

Tell us a little about yourself.
I am a wife and mother to a wonderful family. I have a boy and a girl, 9 and 5, who are just amazing (but of course every mother thinks that). I grew up in small towns, and now love living by a larger city. I was a florist for a number of years before getting married and becoming a stay at home mom. I occasionally get to still do high-end weddings and social events with the business of a good friend of mine, which gives me just enough of an outlet for my floral creativity. When I'm not working, I spend my time taking care of my family, and researching new ideas.>

What special things do you create for weddings?
I create custom wedding accessories with machine embroidery including garters, dress labels, ring pillows, hankies, and bouquet sashes among other things.
My most popular item is the dress labels…I do hundreds of those.

Who or what sparked your interest in making wedding-related items?
Actually, wedding work came to me. When I first started, I was making more women and children's everyday accessories. I put up the dress labels just because I thought they were so interesting, and wanted to see what happened with them. They completely took off, and I got into other wedding accessories as well. Partly due to natural progression, and partly due to customers wanting things that matched their labels and other wedding items. It has turned into a wonderful opportunity for me, especially since taking over a second website www.thegartermaker.net.

What is a little known fact, or something unique about your work that is interesting?
Each item is completely made per order. From the design, to the sewing, to the finishing. I have tens of thousands of designs that can be used to add personality to the items, and in most cases I can create an embroidery design to match a couple's wedding design/monogram exactly.

If you are married, what's the one thing you wish you had for your wedding that you didn't?
I loved our wedding. It was simple, and everyone had a wonderful time. But I wish that I had had the little details. Surprisingly, I didn't have a garter, or dress label, or any of that. If I did it over, I would add more details to the day.
The invitations that are out there today are amazing; I would love to have done something like that.

What is your favorite wedding song?
At Last. I attended a wedding where the bride surprised the groom by singing that to him at the reception, and it was so touching. She was not a professional singer, and worked so hard to be able to do that for him that day. It was very touching.

What is your favorite part of the wedding journey?
As a non-business aspect, I actually love seeing the end of the wedding journey. When everyone relaxes, and all the stress is done, and they can just enjoy the day. As far as business goes, I love having brides email me when they receive their item and say that it is just what they were looking for. It's not something that they need to do, and it means a lot that they take the time to do that, since the items can be so personal.

What advice can you share for all the brides getting married this year?
To make it personal—make it about you, and enjoy the moments.
And let go when you get to that day. As a florist, I've seen weddings from the very small budget; to the very large high six figure budgets. Sometimes, it's the small weddings that make the bigger impact. The ones where you can see the love in the eyes of the couple. Where the wedding is more about them, rather than the guests, and its about the marriage, rather than just the wedding itself.

What is your perfect honeymoon spot?
Europe. My husband spent much of his life growing up in Europe, so I love for him to show me all the places he has been.

If you could pick anyone famous that would purchase your items for their wedding, who would they be?
That is a really hard question! As a business owner, I'd love to have anyone purchase something that will get a picture out there! But personally, I don't know...that's much harder.

If you could choose 1 item from your shop that you wish every bride could have, what would it be?
Definitely the Dress label. It is such a personal item, and even though not many people will see it, it's my favorite item. Even though the dress is not always passed down anymore, if it is kept, the label is a wonderful reminder of the person that wore it. And if the dress is sold, the label can be removed, and it's like still having a piece of the dress as a memento.
