Add Flair to Your Hair: Handmade Bridal Fashion

There are so many ways that weddings transport you and your guests beyond the everyday…even beyond the typical social occasion. And one of the most fun opportunities to do that (at least for the bride!) is with hair accessories.

Let’s face it. With our normal hectic schedules and typical places to go, there’s rarely a chance to do something truly spectacular with your hair. Well, here are 5 ways to go luxe with handmade bridal hair accessories from the Etsy Wedding Team.

Flexible Glamour. Consider jeweled hairpins and snaps for an “all over” glamour look or more flexibility with where hair pieces are placed. Smaller pieces such as these can also work well with a great variety of hair types and styles. {handmade by www.ArtisticEdition.etsy.com}

Vintage Charm. Headbands and vintage touches provide timeless elegance to your look. Great for both bride and bridesmaids. {handmade by www.BeSomethingNew.etsy.com}

Unique. For show-stopping aisle flair, look for a one-of-a-kind or unusual piece. Sculptural hair pieces dress up a simple gown or turn a detailed dress into a stunning ensemble. {handmade by www.PinkTigersDen.etsy.com}

Regal. Be a princess or queen for a day with a tiara or jeweled hair piece. There are many wonderful handmade styles, from jeweled combs to full tiaras. So you can find just the right amount of dazzle. {handmade by www.Mikiye.etsy.com}

Classic. For that “I’m a bride” feeling nothing beats a veil. Long, short, attached to hats or combs, veils may be classic but they are far from uniform. You can define your own bridal look. {handmade by www.veiledbeauty.etsy.com}

Modern Invitation Design: An Interview with Maida Vale

This weeks interview features Heather Locke or Maida Vale. Heather is located in Seattle, WA.

Tell us a little about yourself.
After I graduated from Indiana University’s School of Fine Arts, my career began as a graphic designer in the newspaper industry. Eventually, I moved into interactive design and advertising. When I relocated (with my husband and two kitties) to Seattle in 2005, I decided to focus on establishing a business that reflects what I’m passionate about—clean + simple design paired with great customer service. I’ve always loved working with paper, and after creating my own wedding stationery in 2004, Maida Vale seemed like a natural next step.

What special things do you create for weddings?
I create modern (and affordable!) wedding invitations, save-the-date cards, menus, programs, thank you cards, table numbers, favor tags and much more! To fit within varying budgets, every design in my collection is offered in two printing styles: luxurious letterpress-for-less and affordable offset (flat) printing.

Who or what sparked your interest in making wedding-related items?
Although I began designing invitations for friends long before my own wedding, planning that event really grew my interest in pulling together the look and feel of an entire wedding.

What is a little known fact, or something unique about your work that is interesting?
Like I mentioned previously, every design in my collection can be letterpress or flat printed—meaning there is something for every budget.

If you are married, what’s the one thing you wish you had for your wedding that you didn’t?
Etsy. Converse shoes for my groom. Tea-length bridesmaid dresses. The budget for letterpress printing. None of these were possible at the time!

What is your favorite wedding song?
It’s a toss-up. I adore both The Beatles “In My Life” and Frank Sinatra’s “The Way You Look Tonight”.

What is your favorite part of the wedding journey?
Seeing all of our favorite people come together to share in our happiness was by far the most fulfilling and heartwarming part of our journey. We have never felt more loved in our lives. As an added bonus, many of our guests formed long lasting friendships because of the wedding.

What advice can you share for all the brides getting married this year?
Personalize your wedding as much as possible and don’t stress about perfection. Adding fun and meaningful touches to your wedding day will make it memorable for both you and your guests. Aiming for perfection while planning, however, will only make the journey less enjoyable.

What is your perfect honeymoon spot?
Northern Italy.

If you could pick anyone famous that would purchase your items for their wedding, who would they be?
Lily Allen. Her style is so fresh and fun.

If you could choose 1 item from your shop that you wish every bride could have, what would it be?
A letterpress printed set of wedding invitations, complete with a set of patterned envelope liners and belly bands. I particularly love Wren from my newest collection, and Bloom from the original designs.

Beautiful Handmade Bridal Bouquets

After your dress, what many people remember most about your walk down the aisle are your flowers. And why not? Your choice of flowers says a lot about your wedding, your color scheme and your tastes.

Thankfully, there’s a lot of selection to match your style, from real flowers to not. And the great thing about handmade is you can often work with the artisan to develop a custom look just for you.

Here are just some of the options for your handmade bridal bouquet from the Etsy Wedding Team.

Deep Flowers. Bold color with bouquets doesn’t have to mean bright. Rich, deep color flowers and black or dark accents add a very modern update to the traditional bridal bouquet. {handmade by www.AmoreBride.etsy.com}

Fabulous Feathers. If the perfect bouquet for you is about color and texture, then consider feathers. They instantly luxe up any bouquet and create a real conversation piece. {handmade by www.hairbowswonderworld.etsy.com}

Paper Creations. Paper flowers can be just as beautiful as the real thing…and last much longer. This also makes them great for destination weddings. Dress them up with clay, crystals and other fine details. {handmade by www.parsi.etsy.com}

Clay Reality. Creating clay flowers is an art form on its own. It’s amazing how much like grown flowers they can appear. For a bouquet that may last until your daughter’s wedding, consider clay flowers. {handmade by www.stjudescreations.etsy.com}

Buttons of Fun. Your bouquet doesn’t even need to resemble flowers. For the unconventional, artsy, unique or vintage bride, consider an adorable bouquet of buttons.

Modern Jewelry & Vintage Charm: An Interview with Originals by Lynette

This weeks interview is with Lynnette Onorad from Originals by Lynnette. Lynette is located in Lowell, MI.

Tell us a little about yourself.I’m a mother of three, wife, and avid “do it yourselfer” – I would rather go to a craft store than out to see a movie. I am always creating something in my mind, jotting down ideas, browsing catalogs and magazines and planning my next project, whether it be for my shop or my home. I’m lucky enough to have a workroom separate from anything else and it’s a constant work in itself as my supply stock evolves with my many projects.

What special things do you create for weddings?
Mostly, I create hair accessories, incorporating vintage baubles and feathers. But, I also enjoy making jewelry.

Who or what sparked your interest in making wedding-related items?
I almost began the wedding part of my shop by accident. I had a pair of fabulous vintage floral rhinestone clip earrings in my ohtwovintage shop. I was in the infamous etsy chat rooms and one of the girls asked if they were hair clips. A lightbulb went off in my head, and I began researching methods to turn them into durable clips. A while after that, I began working with feathers, and then I incorporated the two. I’ve noticed since beginning to incorporate the two, I’ve seen many more sellers on etsy doing the same. As I would post the items, I’d get messages from brides exclaiming that “this is exactly what I’ve been looking for!”

What is a little known fact, or something unique about your work that is interesting?
Some of my favorite pieces are actually “accidents.” By that I mean that I’ve had collections of hair pins fall together simply by being next to each other on my work table. Some of my best pieces are a long time in the making because I “wait” for the right finishing touch to present itself, whether it’s a pouf of tulle, a fluttering feather, or a glamorous rhinestone piece. I have two trays of hair pins at any given time that haven’t been included in a set yet, because the right pieces haven’t come along.

If you are married, what’s the one thing you wish you had for your wedding that you didn’t?
My wedding was very simple – my husband and I eloped and were married in a wine cave in Calistoga, CA. I actually didn’t have a headpiece, we didn’t “do” the big wedding scene. I wish I had begun making my vintage hair pins at that point, I would have loved a few more baubles.

What is your favorite wedding song?
My favorite (probably because it was mine) is a little known recording from Frank Sinatra entitled, “All the Way Home.”

What is your favorite part of the wedding journey?
I think the entire part is exciting. I love the sparkle and shine on a bride’s face when she announces her wedding, or when she talks about her dress. It’s a magical time, full of hope and excitement.

What advice can you share for all the brides getting married this year?
While the wedding planning can be fun, don’t forget, you’re not just planning a wedding, you’re embarking upon a new journey – marriage is more than a day. If you can’t picture spending the rest of your life with your partner without the party (the dress, the hall, the accessories, the photos, the invites, the shoes….) then you should determine whether it’s the wedding or the marriage that you’re excited about.

10. What is your perfect honeymoon spot?
I’m a sun lover – anywhere warm and tropical would be best for me.

If you could pick anyone famous that would purchase your items for their wedding, who would they be?I have such a diverse selection of items… so it’s hard to focus on just one type of person. I think I’d lean towards someone with more classic or traditional styling, like Cate Blanchett or Anne Hathaway. But, I could also see someone very stylish and trendy like Sarah Jessica Parker sporting an original piece from my shop.

If you could choose 1 item from your shop that you wish every bride could have, what would it be?
Again, tough question, because my selection is so eclectic. I would have to say that I really enjoy my “something blue” pieces. It’s fun to incorporate a little tradition and giving old pieces new life.

Wedding Wear: Wrap Yourself in Style

One of the biggest trends in fashion right now, wedding or not, is the shrug. Amazing how these beautiful pieces of fabric can completely transform an outfit.

Here’s a mini guide to make your and your bridesmaids’ walk down the aisle even more fabulous with handmade wraps, shrugs and coats found on Etsy. And happily, there’s a look for almost every bridal party.

Delicate. See-through or very light fabric adds an extra detail without overshadowing your dress. And adding a brooch or jewels can match details in your dress or jewelry. {Handmade by www.CRBoggsDesigns.etsy.com}

Knit. There’s so much texture, color and options with knitwear, not to mention warmth. And with the right design, it can be formal enough, and fabulous enough, for weddings. {Handmade by www.TickledPinkKnits.etsy.com}

Detailed. Beading and embroidery in your wrap can complement your dress details, or make a simple dress shine. {Handmade by www.MGMart.etsy.com}

Textured. When your dress is mostly smooth or uniform in texture, adding a different texture can make the entire look pop. {Handmade by www.thesocialseam.etsy.com}

Bold. Why stop at the shoulders? For a truly bold, unexpected look try an overcoat in a complementary color, or one of your wedding colors. {Handmade by www.Countessa.etsy.com}

Elegant Accessories & Jewelry: An Interview with Mikiye's Creations

This weeks interview features Mikiye Narita from Mikiye Creations. Anne is Northern California U.S.A

Tell us a little about yourself
I grew up in a family full of artistic women and was bit by the art bug early in!. life. I have always loved keeping myself involved with anything that I can express my talents in. I spent 15+ years working as a Professional Makeup artist in Los Angeles and about 7 years ago began my love affair with making flowers. It wasn't long until my clients and friends were asking me to make them flowers and accessories so it was a natural move to start my own business. I am completely self taught so it's great fun for me to see how far I have come and how much my skills and techniques have improved

What special things do you create for weddings?
I create one of a kind customized hair accessories. I am constantly learning and being inspired by my Brides. They always have me on my toes when it comes to creating their one of a kind pieces for their Special Day. It's so fantastic to always be striving to be the best I can be and creating heirloom pieces that they will cherish forever.

Who or what sparked your interest in making wedding-related items?
Honestly, it was a friend of a previous roommate of mine that designed INCREDIBLE costumes. My old roommate took Drag to another level! Anyway, his friend eventually went to N.Y. to design couture Wedding Gowns and before he left he gave me the final inspired push! I've always LOVED wedding items and anything glamorous and dressy so after many of my friends and clients swaying me I thought I'd give it a try!

What is a little known fact, or something unique about your work that is interesting?
I've always been inspired by history! Art History was one of my favorite classes!
I just drooled over the elaborate clothing and accessories. The paintings, colors and representations of opulence drove me wild! I try to incorporate that richness into my work.
Little inklings of it here and there. I think my attention to detail and quality help bring my passion to fruition.
If you are married, what’s the one thing you wish you had for your wedding that you didn’t?
N/A

What is your favorite wedding song?
It had to be you. I always get weak in the knees when I hear it.

What is your favorite part of the wedding journey?
After all the time with friends and family helping out it's wonderful when you see it all come together!

What advice can you share for all the brides getting married this year?
I would say to just take a step back and breath.
It's ALL ABOUT YOU so don't get stressed out!
Ask A LOT of questions and be patient. Give yourself plenty of time and everything always comes together in the end!

What is your perfect honeymoon spot?
Italy
Since I first saw one of my favorite movies Room With A View i knew it would have to be Italy.

If you could pick anyone famous that would purchase your items for their wedding, who would they be?
Oprah and Drew Barrymore. Drew had my earrings but I would LOVE to see her in a wedding piece of mine!

If you could choose 1 item from your shop that you wish every bride could have, what would it be?
A custom hair piece. There really is nothing like something hand made specifically for YOU.
